Call for papers from the AIWG research group online
The AIWG research group ‘Islam and Digitality’ will host the international conference ‘Islam&Digitality. Media, Materiality, Hermeneutics’ on 10 and 11 July 2026. The conference will cover three areas of research:
- digital communication of images and ideas of Islamic history in contemporary contexts and their connection to religious identity, discourses of memory, as well as forms of theological differentiation
- digitisation of religious source texts and exegetical literature, as well as the perception and use of this resource by Muslim scholars and believers
- the use of digital media, technologies and platforms by Muslim actors to disseminate specific interpretations of Islamic belief and practice
In its call for papers, the research group invites contributions dealing with the above-mentioned areas in various media types such as databases, social media platforms, mobile phone and virtual reality applications, as well as AI-generated content. The complete Call for Papers is available here. Proposals are to be handed in to islamdigitality@aiwg.de until 19 December 2025.
The project ‘Islam and Digitality: Media, Materiality, Hermeneutics’ is jointly implemented by researchers at Humboldt University of Berlin, Goethe University Frankfurt and the University of Erfurt within the framework of the Academy for Islam in Research and Society (AIWG). AIWG is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
