‘Diversity’ in the Muslim-European context. The AIWG publishes a new conference report
Today, the AIWG has published a conference report entitled „Being Muslim in Europe – Orienting oneself in the context of “good” and “bad” diversity“. The AIWG, in collaboration with the Swiss Centre for Islam and Society (SZIG) at the University of Fribourg, organised a conference on the same topic on 17 and 18 November 2023.
The conference report presents a summary of the keynotes and the panels held during the conference, which was attended by 25 researchers from Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Italy. The conference addressed the concepts of „diversity“ and „orientation“ in migration societies from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The discussion focused on the distinction between „good“ or legitimate forms of diversity and other categories of diversity that tend to be perceived negatively in social discourses.
The report concludes with suggestions for inter-university and interdisciplinary cooperation in exploring the concept of ‚diversity‘, not least through wider use of empirical research methods within Islamic theological studies.
The conference report can be downloaded here on the Website of the AIWG.
